ISIS Credits and Acknowledgements

Many individuals have been involved in the design and implementation of the ISIS system. It began with a prototype version developed prior to 1989. In January 1989 the design of the "Build 2" ISIS programming environment began. This new system was a complete re-design based upon the experience with the prototype version.

Formulation of the ISIS Design Requirements was a collaborative effort by the following institutions and personnel: U.S. Geological Survey, Astrogeology Branch, Flagstaff, AZ (Hugh Kieffer (Science Advisor), Larry Soderblom (Science Advisor), Jim Torson (System Designer), Kris Becker (System Design), Eric Eliason, Kay Edwards, Randy Kirk); Jet Propulsion Laboratory of California Institution of Technology (Bill Smythe (System Manager)); University of California at Los Angeles, Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (Bob Mehlman); University of Hawaii, Planetary Geosciences Division of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and SETS Technology (John Lindelow, Julianna Lo, Ralph Lewis); Oxford University (Lucas Kamp). In addition, there was a smaller degree of participation by: U.S. Geological Survey, Denver CO (Roger Clark); Observatoire de Paris, Muedon, France (Pierre Drossart); Arizona State University (Don Anderson); University of Colorado (Paul Jensen, Mike Jones).

The Design and Implementation of ISIS was largely directed and performed by the U.S. Geological Survey (Jim Torson, Kris Becker, Kay Edwards, Eric Eliason). Also contributing to this effort were Julianna Lo, Ralph Lewis, Bob Mehlman, and Pierre Drossart. This version of the ISIS system was implemented solely for the VAX VMS system.

Beginning in 1992, USGS Flagstaff began an effort to make ISIS portable to Unix-based platforms. There were modifications and additions made to the VMS design to produce a system that is easily portable to a variety of Unix-based platforms. The majority of these changes were made by Kris Becker and Jim Torson with contributions from Eric Eliason and Tracie Sucharski. Once the programming environment was complete, a very large effort by USGS Flagstaff began to port the VMS ISIS programs to Unix and migrate the PICS (USGS) image processing system functionality into the ISIS environment. This effort was led by Kay Edwards with contributions from: Eric Eliason, Jim Torson, Debbie Cook, Kris Becker, Tracie Sucharski, Jim Mathews, Jeff Andersoni, and Trent Hare. Contributions from the Scientific staff included: Larry Soderblom, Hugh Kieffer, Alfred McEwen, Mark Robinson, Tammy Becker, Ella Lee, and Lisa Gaddis.

We would like to thankfully acknowledge the use of some concepts and elements from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory VICAR system. The ability to execute ISIS applications from the shell (Shell ISIS) and the ISIS application "fx" were made possible from VICAR software technology. Certain elements of these functions were derived through modifications of the VICAR software to satisfy key elements of these features in the ISIS system.

To date, since the system has been released and utilized in the scientific community, many others have contributed comments and suggestions that have influenced the evolution of the ISIS system. Their contributions have been valuable in improving the system.

There are undoubtedly individuals that were overlooked in their contribution to the ISIS system. Their exclusion is not intentional or deliberate. Our apologies for any oversight.
