ISIS Internet Download Notes

The following describes notes on downloading ISIS files over the Internet via the Web or via anonymous ftp.

1) Netscape Preferences for Web Downloading

Be sure that the area in which Netscape is placing the file has enough room for the file. Some of the ISIS data files are rather large, and if the Netscape default of /tmp is not large enough to accomodate them, the download will fail.

  1. Enter ftp://ftpflag.wr.usgs.gov in:
    • Netscape: Location selection box
    • Explorer: Address selection box
  2. Double Click on "dist" folder icon
  3. Double Click on "isis" folder icon
  4. Double Click on "linux_ix86" or "solaris" folder icon
  5. Right Click on "desired_file", on pull down menu select:
    • Netscape: Save Link As...
    • Explorer: Copy To Folder...
2) Anonymous ftp Downloading

Use the following procedures to download files from the USGS anonymous ftp site:

  1. ftp to ftpflag.wr.usgs.gov
  2. When prompted for a name enter "ftp" or "anonymous".
  3. When asked for an ident enter your login name and location. For example: jmathews@sirius.wr.usgs.gov
  4. Change the default directory to dist/isis via:
    • cd dist/isis
  5. Now go to the directory containing the desired version:
    • cd solaris # For Sun Solaris
    • cd linux_ix86 # For PC/Linux
  6. Set the transfer mode to binary:
    • type image
  7. Get the update file:
    • get whatever.tar
  8. Logout with "bye".
