Mars Datasets (most GIS-ready)
« on: November 28, 2006, 08:56:02 AM »
I will try to keep this thread updated (updated Feb 2016).  I will mention some PDS, ISIS and GIS converted datasets.

Bundled:
Mars Global GIS DVD. All datasets on the DVD should be predefined and project-on-the-fly to any other projection if using ArcMap. You can get a version (2.1) from this ftp site:
ftp://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/pub/pigpen/mars/Global_GIS_Mars

For PDS datasets you can search the PDS archives or create your own images using map-a-planet2:
*PDS image archive: http://pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov/ Many datasets scattered over the vast PDS archives but sometimes they can be hard to locate.
*map-a-planet2: http://astrogeology.usgs.gov/tools/map
*ESA (PDS archives): http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=PSA (parent site: http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/area/index.cfm?fareaid=9 )
*CRISM:  http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/mro/crism.htm - suggest trying to use the map projected MRDRs first.  GDAL should be able to convert these from PDS to other GIS formats. (on-line viewer. http://crism-map.jhuapl.edu/ Using available browse PNG and txt information these images could be brought registered into a GIS )
SHARAD: No idea how to use this data in a GIS yet without the team's help.

Online Bases: http://planetarygis.blogspot.com/2014/09/tips-to-interact-with-astros-wms-maps.html

GIS formated bases: I will list the files here that have been converted from PDS, ISIS, MSSS, ASU, Goddard, LPL, and other sources into GIS-compatible formats. First, feel free to browse: ftp://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/pub/pigpen/mars/

*Image "footprint" polygons are in various directories (e.g. hrsc, viking, moc, themis) on our ftp site: ftp://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/pub/pigpen/mars/ but also check the Mars PDS ODE page. They have many image footprint files in shapefile format: http://ode.rsl.wustl.edu/mars/indextools.aspx

*MOLA points! from Mars ODE also: http://ode.rsl.wustl.edu/mars/indextools.aspx

and various other available files in the ftp site

Credits for all these great bases should be included in all of the downloads. If you use these bases, please credit the original authors.

Also note that there are many good web tools out there like JMars, NASA's WorldWind, Google Mars, MRCTR GIS Lab viewer, Mars-o-web, etc.

THEMIS VIS without any processing - still in beta for ArcMap:

For MARSIS you can go to the 3rd Mars Express Data Workshop site and its ftp://ssols01.esac.esa.int/pub/workshops/07_MEX_DW_June_2008/11_Wednesday/]ftp[/ftp] site.

There are also SHARAD data browse jpg images on the SHARAD PDS. My SHARAD footprint shapefile contains a JPG_LINK field.

I've put the footprints I make here: http://www.iivault.com/marsdata/
These are: HRSC, OMEGA, SHARAD, CRISM, HiRISE and if I get confirmation that the geo information is correct also MARSIS.

Heya -- the site ftp://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/pub/pigpen/mars is inaccessible again. Could someone please remount the disk (or if it's been moved, please update this thread)?

Thanks!!

It is back up. We just got a small boost in our network so hopefully that will help with keeping this site active until many of these data sets have been moved into our data portal Astropedia.

For new data sets, ASU is about ready for a new THEMIS and the HiRISE Team with an update to their entire catalog to help with some label issues. We also have a new service for creating your own CTX map projected images called "POW". Sign-up here: http://astrocloud.wr.usgs.gov/signup/

I can't access it now. Are there times when it's supposed to be offline? If so I can work around that schedule. Thanks! And thanks for posting about the POW service, it looks great.

Lori - Try it again. We are getting hammered with network access (robots and scraping). I found out the new bandwidth hasn't been turned on but it should be soon. Hopefully that will help us.

Hopefully you can get there -- If not I can burn a DVD!

For any larger downloads make sure to use "wget" so it can restart if you get bounced.
