Description

Local Phase Angle is missing from the ISIS Glossary and should be added. Once added to the glossary, fx's documentation for the phal operator must be updated to link to the Local Phase Angle definition in the glossary.

DoD:

  • Is there such a thing as Local Phase Angle?
    • If not, why does fx have this?

After consulting the ISIS Glossary definition of Phase Angle, another external source (HiRISE FAQ), and drawing a couple pictures, there is no such thing as Local Phase Angle.

The phase angle is the relationship between the Sun's position, a point-of-interest on the surface (where the camera is looking), and the position of the camera. Keeping this in mind, the shape of the target body at the point-of-interest (e.g target shape is ellipsoid or DEM) does not affect the position of the sun, the position of the camera, or the point-of-interest location. The emission and incidence angles can differ from their local counterparts because they use the normal of the point-of-interest to determine their angles.

So, we do not need to add a definition for Local Phase Angle to the glossary, and we need to remove the phal operator from fx. This will spawn a ticket.
