ISIS3 preferences not where the error message says itis
I tried to make a 120 GB mosaic. The error message says I need to change the max value to larger than 12GB at ~/.Isis/IsisPreferences. But there is no such file. I have no clue where to change this preference value...

You might need to take another look - when I look I see the file /home/laz/.Isis/IsisPreferences
If for some reason you still do not see your file you can copy the system default file into your .Isis directory and modify the MaximumSize value under the CubeCustomizaton group. The default file can be found under the $ISISROOT directory which expands to /usgs/pkgs/isis3.5.1/isis/ if your are using the public version of isis3.
If all else fails I can come by take a look.

I did a google search for ISIS Preference file and found an ancient discussion...
Copied the file out of $ISISROOT and all seems to be working.
But the error message might need to be rewritten or the ISIS3 installation should create a user preference file because the current error message is not sufficient.

- Status changed from New to In Progress

Just to clarify - did you change the value of MaximumSize in the preference file? The default is 12 Gb and automos/mapmos/etc. will eventually fail again if it wasn't modified and may take a while to tell you so.

We briefly cover the Isis preference file in the workshops. Below are the details we share for future reference.
Instructions to over-ride system-wide defaults:
You can create a “hidden” .Isis directory in your $HOME area
Copy the IsisPreferences file to this directory
cp $ISISROOT/IsisPreferences $HOME/.Isis/IsisPreferences
View and edit your copy of the IsisPreferences file
And for more information that we do have:
I have also related an old ticket that notes the need for improved user access to the preference file.
