Description

I am trying to map project HRSC images of Phobos. The only place I can find some (e.g. HE776_0002_SR2.IMG ) is from PSA (http://psa.esa.int/ - down as of 12:30 PST) in .IMG format

using PDS2ISIS works okay, but when I use spiceinit I get

PROGRAMMER ERROR No value or default value to translate for translation group [MissionName] in file [/data/JPL_Stereo/Isis/isis/../data/base/translations/MissionName2DataDir.trn].

I did try to update my /base/translations and /mex data directories via rsync to make sure I was not missing anything... any advice?

more generally:
I can find documentation on processing hrsc .img files but not .IMG files... suggestions on processing chain for map projection?

Thanks!

Hi,

I haven't personally processed HRSC data (except for already projected dtm's) but I just did a search for "hrsc" on the isis online software manual (https://isis.astrogeology.usgs.gov/Application/index.html#Mars_Express) and it looks like isis has a camera model for that data. Use the ingestion software hrsc2isis for that instrument instead of pds2isis to propagate the relevant label information, then try spiceinit. Hopefully there is spice information for that particular image. Once successfully spiced, run cam2map to project it (https://isis.astrogeology.usgs.gov/Application/presentation/Tabbed/cam2map/cam2map.html).

I don't see HRSC specific processing tutorials on-line, but maybe check out some of the lessons on the wiki (https://fixit.wr.usgs.gov/fixit/projects/isis/wiki/ISIS_Online_Workshops) for more information.

Let us know if you can't get your data ingested or spiced.

Hi Lynn,

hrsc2isis was my initial thought as well, however I get the error:

[HE776_0002_SR2.IMG] appears to be an rdr file. Use pds2isis.

which is why I used pds2isis...

Bummer. If the site had been up I was going to grab the file and see if that worked.

Unfortunately, spiceinit won't work on an image that does not have the proper ingestion labels and a camera model.
If the pds image is already map projected, then pds2isis will get it into isis (as you already know), and map2map can be used to reproject it if desired. Is there any chance the data are already projected? If it is, the label will include mapping information (projection, lat/lon).

It looks like the Washington University Imaging Node has HRSC data: http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/mars_express/hrsc.htm
Maybe you can see what's available there and if any of it will work in isis. There is not sufficient documentation in isis to make it clear to me what sort of hrsc data it prefers.

I'll check with some other folks to see if there is a better path to point you down.

Hi Lynn,
I checked fairly extensively on ODE, and they do have Phobos datasets of HRSC images, but I was hoping to get the non-projected images first. I am not exactly sure why but it looks like PSA has images that wustl node of PDS does not have for phobos. One note worthy item is that all of the image formats are .img for wustl (and work fine with hrsc2isis) and all the PSA images are in .IMG format and give the error mentioned above.
I am going to wait until the PSA site goes back up, and see if I cannot find an image that is available from both wustl as a .img and PSA as a .IMG then get back to you after testing again.
Thanks again for your help!
Marshall
